Following germline cancer genetic testing guideline would not detect all heritable cancer gene information

At present, genetic testing guideline for cancer patients is based on family history, onset age and tumor type to decide which genetic testing panel to use. MSKCC (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) recruited 1040 patients of different cancer types and analyzed 76 cancer-related genes. More than 50% of the cases tested positive for specific gene mutations, but their clinical symptoms were not strongly correlated with these mutations. Therefore, following the current guideline for heritable cancer genetic testing would not be able to provide applicable genetic information to patients. For this reason, comprehensive cancer genetic testing panels that test multiple cancer types was proposed as a more efficient testing method, which increases the possibility of finding clinically-related mutations and provides a more precise direction of treatment and prevention.
